Microplastics—tiny plastic particles less than 5mm—and even smaller nanoplastics, which are less than 1 micrometer in size, have been found in air, water, and food, raising serious concerns about their impact on human health. These particles can enter the body through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact, and may accumulate in organs and tissues. Research suggests they can cause inflammation, disrupt hormones, and interfere with cellular processes. Nanoplastics, due to their extremely small size, may pose an even greater risk as they can cross biological barriers such as the blood-brain barrier. Some studies link exposure to respiratory and digestive issues, reproductive harm, and disruptions in the gut microbiome. Emerging evidence also points to potential mental health effects, affecting mood and cognitive function. As both micro- and nanoplastics continue to spread through the environment, understanding and reducing their health impacts is increasingly urgent.
